In the Safe Schools NOLA model, a Teacher Support Specialist provided consultation and performance feedback to develop teacher competencies in the use of trauma-informed practices. Every K – 8 homeroom teacher was observed at least four times per year to assess the use of trauma-informed practices in the classroom using the Safe Schools NOLA Classroom Observation Tool.
The Teacher Support Specialist then reviewed feedback from these observations with each teacher, engaged in goal setting around specific practices, and provided ongoing consultation with performance feedback related to the specified goals. The Safe Schools NOLA coaching model was grounded in Motivational Interviewing and Reflective Supervision.
